I agree with David that this the particular question of Antillean
participation in French soccer is a quite important and barely studied one.
Lilian Thuram is a great figure to look at here, especially because he has
been a quite courageous and active critic of both Le Pen and Sarkozy in
France, and has also written a number of things, notably the preface to a
recent novel about the banlieue. But the presence of Caribbean players does
seem to get a bit overlooked at times: portrayals of the French team as
made of "children of immigrants" are common, and obviously do not begin to
account for the presence of Antillean presence on the team. A number of key
players on the 2006 team — notably Thuram, Henry, Abidal, Malouda, Gallas
— were either born in the Caribbean departments or had parents from there.

There are definitely many interesting questions to pursue here, even if
many will certainly be overshadowed by Zidane for some time!
