Black Mozart

Joseph de Bologne Chevalier de Saint-George (1745-1799) has often been called “Black Mozart”. Mozart’s fellow composer did not only live an exciting life – he left behind numerous pieces of music which are worth rediscovering. In a talk including examples of the composer’s music, Dr Frank Piontek (Bayreuth) examines the adventurous biography of this ambivalent master fencer and composer, whose career in society brought him from Guadeloupe to Paris’ sophisticated and noble high-society. Additionally, this talk will explain, why – with justification – Saint-George became renowned for his compositions, especially for his virtuoso violin concerts and the so-called Sinfoniae Concertante and how he become a significant person in the French music scene of this time.

From May 8 until May 20, there will be an English documentary on Chevalier de Saint-George’s life and work on DVD, which you may watch free of charge in the visitor centre (ground floor) of the Augsburg Mozart House.
The entrance fee to the Mozart House’s constant exhibition is € 3,50 for adults, € 2 (reduced price) and € 7 for families. Opening hours: Tue – Sun, 10 am to 5 pm.
