Commemoration of Abolition and the Life of Saint-Georges

On May 10 and 11, 2007, nearly 150 young people from the mainland and the Overseas Departments of France presented La Table de Marbre combining theater, music, fencing and ballet in
Vichy, France.

The occasion was the National Commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery.  Abolition and the life of one of the most well-known 18th century Black composers Chevalier de Saint-Georges were the focus of an entire year of academic work in Letters, Theater, History and Geography, English, Music, Choral Singing, Physical Education and Sports, and Technology.« La Table de Marbre », or « The Marble Table », was the location at which all people of color living in mainland
France were required to register, under a decree of the King.  The idea for the project originated at Le Collège Victor HUGO (Victor Hugo College), of Saint-Yorre, and grew to include other mainland schools and Le Collège du Bailliff (Bailliff College) in
Guadeloupe.
Many thanks to
Jean-Claude Halley of
Guadeloupe, President of L’Association des Amis de Joseph Bologne (Association of the Friends of Joseph Bologne). See some (hear more) of the performance at
